Welcome to Elsir Vale.
Scales of War adventure path played weekly at Pandemonium Books and Games in Cambridge, Massachusetts, USA.
The ongoing adventures of the neurotic gnome, this time with Jay’s blessing.
Part 3! There won’t be any more until the adventure begins.
All of Kustaa’s dialogue has been approved by Steve, so the whole thing is official canon. Feedback is always appreciated, or reciprocal tales of adventure and/or Aaron Sorkin-esque witty banter.
Dori Joins the Gang, Part 2 is now up. Part 3 (the last for the time being, I’m pretty sure) will go up once it’s written and Steve can sign off on Kustaa’s part being canon.
I don’t know how to format, apparently.

@pwaickman micro314 is me, with player (not GM) privileges, so I can see what you guys see and make sure none of the GM-only stuff I’ve written is leaking.
We appear to have 6 people in our party. Did I miss something?
Shouldn’t all this be in the “forums” and not the “comments”?
Hey now, didn’t even know people were posting here!
I wrote that up mostly as flavor text and also to toss around ideas of what to do with the leftovers. If we could use the residuum…
We should revisit how we left off with rewards from when we last played. I’m also assuming there was a layover in game time where my character would be able to reassess his abilities. I did realize all his powers were against reflex and would like to diversify that a little more by swapping a few things out.
What’s this about gear-snatching?
Let me do some spreadsheeting and figure out what the proper treasure distribution ought to be, ‘cause the standard three-magic-items-and-money rule we use for delves probably won’t be quite right.
It’d be all right for Kustaa to take Myrca’s ritual book and whatever ritual components she had. He’s already mastered all the rituals, and the party still has the same number of copies.
Yeah, I know it doesn’t make a lot of sense to bury these powerful magic items. But we do have a game to run; Kustaa has his magic toys, and the new characters will have theirs, and insert talk about appropriate challenge level here.
Let’s assume Ember’s and Myrca’s gear is wrapped up in interminable paperwork in some Overlook probate court.
From a meta standpoint, the adventure gives out prizes at a balanced rate and if one character scavenged the bodies of 2 level 10 PC’s he’d wind up being WAY overpowered.
I’m going to have to veto some of the back story you posted in the forum, Steve. There is no chance that Etton would abide stripping Ember and Myrca of their gear and profiting from the deaths of his friends. I would vote for:
1. Burying the fallen Heroes with their arms and armor. Full pomp and circumstance.
2. Using any cash reserves that Ember and Myrca had to underwrite the funerals that war-ravaged Overlook could hardly afford.
3. Kustaa consolidating any residuum (as well as any other desired mundane items or consumables that I’m not aware of) into his supplies and taking custody of Myrca’s ritual book.
4. Etton and Dwarin taking any potions for their travels.
Heroes of Overlook = Ember, Myrca, Kustaa, Etton, and Dwarin.
This new group’s working title is probably Kustaa’s [enter alliterative noun here] until we do something to distinguish ourselves as a party in our own right. Then we can either chose a name for ourselves (don’t know if it was Jay or Ember who was opposing that idea previously) or have one given to us like the old crew did. I heard that “The Farstriders” is available again.
@pwaickman It’s a blink-and-you’ll-miss-it line. Leena talks about Modra’s plan to sabotage the foundry, and the party kills him while he’s doing it. But he’s done enough damage that a ground tremor is enough to finish the job.
Not that anyone who didn’t read the adventure would know it.
From The Shadow Rift of Umbraforge: “He offers the party the chance to join him, but then an explosion rocks Umbraforge: Sarshan’s laboratory was sabotaged by Modra.”
Did anyone else miss the fact that it was Modra who caused the explosion? I’ve been under the impression this whole time that it was just a deus ex machina volcano eruption that rescued the party. Do we know how he sabotaged it?
No more striker Kustaa? What has the world come to?!?
Also, I’m adding “Meet Etton and Dwarin as NPCs” to “Play with a Triceratops” on my wish list.
When he joined us, Stefan had explained Dwarin’s back story a bit. His party back in Germany had been part of some war, possibly against giants. I think something fey killed a friend of his, because he had a longstanding hatred of all things fey.
Does anyone recall any other details? I love the idea that Dwarin also had to return to his homeland in order to be conscripted into military service.
Brindol is bigger than I imagined it.
