Rescue at Rivenroar

“Rescue at Rivenroar” is the first adventure in the Scales of War campaign.

Synopsis

The characters helped to repel an attack on Brindol by the revived Red Hand of Doom, which kidnapped seven of the city’s residents, stolen the city’s treasured war relics, and engaged in other acts of banditry and destruction in the vicinity. After making their way to Castle Rivenroar, the party penetrated the Red Hand’s lair, rescued the six living captives and recovered Brindol’s treasures, and slew the Red Hand’s hobgoblin war chief.

Plot

Act I

Interrupted during their drinking and gambling session at the Antler and Thistle Tavern, the party helped to repel an invading horde of goblins and hobgoblins who bore the mark of the Red Hand of Doom. An ogre hurling casks of pitch struck Ember a lucky blow with his club and felled the dragonborn, who was later revived.

The next morning, the party found that seven residents of the town – Adronsius, Jalissa, Kartenix, Mirtala, Sertanian, Thurann, and Zerriksa – had been kidnapped during the attack. Furthermore, the town’s treasured relics of war, won during their previous conflict with the Red Hand, had been stolen. These relics included an ornate, gilded dragoncrest helm, a ceremonial platinum longsword, a set of three shields with the Red Hand insignia, a set of iron gauntlets with extensive filigree, and a heraldic battle standard depicting two hands clasped in a handshake. Their performance of the previous night having been noticed, the party was summoned to the town’s council chamber to meet with Eoffram Troyas, a half-elven council member.

During the meeting, Etton Roy absent-mindedly began pawing through Troyas’s personal items, earning him and the party a healthy dose of suspicion. Still, Troyas needed them; he explained what had happened during the night, and offered the party a reward for recovering the captives and the relics. Upon their acceptance of the offer, Troyas informed them that the guards had caught a hobgoblin prisoner and that they might begin by interrogating him.

Though the wizard Alastair favored beating the hobgoblin, Brindol’s guards forbade it, saying that the prisoner had to be kept healthy and fit for trial. Still, the party was able to get the hobgoblin to talk. He revealed that they were led by Sinruth, a hobgoblin who saw himself as a descendant of the Red Hand horde that had menaced Brindol ten years prior. He also revealed that this revived Red Hand was lairing in the catacombs beneath Castle Rivenroar, and that the invaders had been ordered to take prisoners to feed the “undead horrors” guarding part of the hideout. However, the hobgoblin knew nothing of the stolen relics or why they were taken. He drew a crude map pointing the way through the mountains to the castle. Armed with this information, the party set out on their mission.
