“Thooorradddiinnnnn….Help me!!!!”, Kaela’s frantic cries tugged at his heart. He redoubled his efforts to get free, but the orcs holding him was twice his size and even more that in strength. “Let her go, you toad faced son of ratbitch!”, he yelled hoarsely, “I swear to Moradin, if you hurt her, I will kill every last one of you!”. One of the bigger orc, gruffawed “Looker’ere tiny dwarf make big threat. Meba Gratgul teach tiny dwarf lesson”, slamming the butt end of his axe into his ribs. He doubled over in pain. He involuntary sucked in his breath, a sharp white hot pain shot throughout his chest. He lifted his eyes, widening has he watched a cruel jagged orc axe rise in the air, and… Thoradin’s eye’s snapped open. He was in the Boradin’s Watch common room. In the dim light from coals in the hearth, Thoradin could make out the still shapes of his comrades, his family. The sound of gentle snoring was the only sound, save the soft sound of approaching footsteps. “Thoradin?, Good you are up, the captain of the guard wants to see you”, whispered Kalad. Thoradin slowly rose, rubbing and remembering the spot where the orc’s axe struck him. The dream always came as a warning of dark times, call it a premonition or divine intervention, Thoradin knew suffering and death was not far. The halls were empty save the occasional dwarf hurrying on an early morning errand. They arrived to the captain’s office without giving warning. The captain looked up from the missive he was reading. “Thoradin, Kalad dire news at this early morning…never a good omen. Our scouts report a few maggot brained orcs making way to the monastery.” “Moradin’s beard!”, exclaimed Thoradin, “My hammer will smash their skulls into dust.” “Your hammer will have to suffice on the skulls of the main orc army heading towards the Watch”, the captain replied, “Kalad will warn the monastry, and you Thoradin will be needed to help defend the keep.”
While Kalad was having his own adventure. Thoradin valiantly attempted to hold back the massive horde of orcs and trolls at Bordin’s Watch. There are some accounts, Thoradin managed to hold off hundreds at key defensive choke points allowing his fellow guards to execute a strategic retreat back to safety. While the defense was stout, the dwarves were finally beaten back. This gave the citizens of Overlook and militia to prepare for the coming onslaught. Thoradin managed to return to Overlook with the remaining survivors. There he was reunited with Kalad in defense of the city. While the battle was won, it came at a great expense. The victory left Thoradin feeling hollow, the fall of Boradin’s Watch coupled with Kalad’s promotion weighed heavily on his conscious and on his heart. Thoradin became increasingly restless, the only respite was in the bottom of his mug. One night during an alcohol induced deep sleep Thoradin again dreamed the same dream. Instead of a sense of forbidding, he awoke feeling resolute and determined to regain honor for himself.
